Photoshop – A Necessary Marcom Tool?

Do you really need Adobe Photoshop in your Marcom tool kit? Perhaps. But there are ways to minimize your costs.

Why Photoshop?

Adobe Photoshop is a high-powered image editing and design tool. It is considered by many in marketing communications and graphic design to be the best tool for the job. It allows you to do a great deal of photo manipulation and is great for design work, too. But you pay dearly for it. Another drawback: it offers so many features, it can be a bit overwhelming to learn.

That said, in my opinion, Photoshop is the best tool on the market for pulling an object out of its background or, to put it another way, eliminating the background behind an object. It requires the use of the Pen tool and knowledge of how to do bezier curves. (Lines can be bowed using the tool; the resulting line is called a bezier curve.) But nothing else allows you to snip an object out of its background so cleanly, paste it onto a separate layer, and do with it what you want. (If you delete or disable the original layer, you are left with only the item you pulled.) If you are working with product, you will probably want to do this, as you will no doubt need to place the image in a different background for things like your collaterals and trade show murals.

That’s not to say that Photoshop and other programs do not offer alternative ways to eliminate a background. There’s the Magic Wand tool, which detects the difference in pixel colors and eliminates those whose color closely match the pixel on which you’ve clicked. If your background and the object are distinctly different colors, this sometimes works. There’s the Masking tool, the Magnetic Lasso tool, the Extract tool, and others, many of which are also available in other photo editing programs.

The problem with them is that it’s usually hard to tell where the object you want to pull ends and where the background begins because objects throw shadows. And oftentimes backgrounds that are wildly different in color from the object will reflect that color onto the object at the edges. Once again, tools that determine where one color starts and another ends have a tough time of it, and, as a result, while the background can be eliminated, the edges of the remaining image (your product) will appear rough or uneven, in part because pixels are square. It’s as if you were drunk or using pinking shears when  you did it.

With the Pen tool, it’s as if you are using regular scissors or, better yet, an X-ACTO knife. You can shoot your object against a softer background and still pick it out from that background without the rough edges or the reflection. For all but the smallest photos, you will want this kind of quality image.

In Conclusion

Photoshop and Photoshop Elements are cross-platform and, because they are part of a larger suite of tools, work well with their sister programs. In my opinion, Photoshop is worth the cost, particularly if you do not farm out your photography.

For a more extensive review of the two products, go to Photoshop Tips & Tricks: Photoshop vs. Photoshop Elements. It also includes Corel Paint Shop Pro in the discussion.
